3 Tips for a Calming Bedroom

Do you need a calming retreat to rest your head at night? No matter your personal style, we can all benefit from a bedroom that is relaxing and well suited for sleep.

Today, I am sharing three simple ways you can instantly create a more calming bedroom. No hammers or rearranging required!

Declutter Your Space

Literally the most important thing you can do to help create a more calming environment is declutter. Any room in your home can benefit from this one tip.

When we have too much stuff it becomes easy for a space to get messy. Declutter as much as you can from your life, but this is extremely important in your bedroom. Take time to start with a corner of your room. I tend to think your nightstand is a good place to start.

Remove everything from the surface and remove anything in your drawers you simply don’t need.

If you find things you want to keep, perhaps just rehoming them to a new spot or room is best.

Be prepared to donate items and throw out any miscellaneous papers you may have sitting around.

Try to do as much decluttering as you can for 15 minutes a day until you have gone through your entire room.

Create Symmetry

If you want to create visual calm and peace, give your eyes fewer stimuli.

Symmetry is a nice way to let your eyes “rest” so you aren’t forced to look up, down and all around because there are many competing elements.

Start by flanking your bed with two matching nightstands.

Then set a pair of matching lamps or sconces to further balance out both sides of your bed.

Sconces are great to free up your nightstand surface, but hardwiring may be tricky and costly.

If you use lamps just be sure to get the right size for your nightstand and the right height.

Another simple way to create symmetry comes in the form of matching throw pillows on your bed.

Two oversized decorative pillows like the ones below balance the bed and therefore, add to the overall symmetry of the room.

Layer Neutral Bedding

My final tip is create a layered and neutral bed.

Regardless of the your room’s size, the height or color, a bed is the largest surface in your room. So it stands to reason that a neutral and layered bed will evoke a sense of calm in your space. Keeping patterns minimal and colors neutral is the key to success.

Bedding with lots of color or pattern can be beautiful, but if it’s a more calming bedroom you seek, a bed with neutral textiles and luxurious layers will be inviting and tranquil.

Use white or light grey sheets for a timeless and easy to layer foundation. Use a simple duvet with a nice detail like scallops or ties and add a waffle or muslin blanket across the width of the bed. Finish with two large throw pillows for that added symmetry.

You can add more layers if you so choose, but this is a very simple yet gorgeous way to style a bed.
