Mudrooms are an increasingly desired space in homes. No longer do we just need a boot room for northerners trekking through snow, everyone needs a place to “land” when they get home. If you are a family of 2 or 20, mudrooms just make sense. Having a designated spot for keys, jackets, shoes, bags and more, has become a greater asset to homeowners than ever before.
Let's take a look at 12 mudroom designs that will have you inspired to update or make something of your own!
What I love about this design is the mixture of closed and open storage. For things you want out of sight, you have drawers and cabinets to choose from. If you want to have something easy to access like a backpack or purse, you have hooks to use. What a gorgeous room to be greeted by when you come home!
A bright white mudroom might feel hard to clean, but this mudroom has a secret weapon, brick flooring! This brick flooring is going to hide dirt so well that you can pretty much ensure your floors will always look gorgeous. For a room that is going to see dirt, this really is a game changer. I love that the brick is warm, but this room is still extremely light and bright. There is so much to love about this space.
The color, the hardware, the cabinetry are all amazingly gorgeous in this blue mudroom. However, my absolute favorite thing about the way this mudroom was designed, is the use of a surface for dropping items like keys, glasses, etc. There is even a ton of natural light despite this deep blue hue. Rather than leaving the bench bare, they cozied up the room with an upholstered bench seat!
This mudroom really knows how to bring a lot of style. The black and white flooring really make a bold statement underneath a vintage rug. There is also a ton of functionality with the variety of storage options. We all know mudrooms are meant to get a little messy, but sometimes cleaning them can be a nightmare. If you want a way to easily wipe down surfaces, choose a high gloss or semi gloss paint finish. I love that by choosing this glossy paint there is more light being bounced around AND it is now easier to clean the cabinets.
In this mudroom, the tonal effect is gorgeous. The greige tones make the space inviting. There is an entire wall here of closed storage (love that) and you have a spot for your furry friends. I love how the dog crates are built-in for a high-end look. This is no ordinary and plain mudroom!
Now, this mudroom is also a laundry room. Some of us love the way two separate spaces look, but truly, having your washing machine in the same location as dirty socks or wet clothes is AWESOMENESS. I love that this room has a ton of storage and a large surface for folding clothes. If you are unsure of combining your mudroom and laundry, trust me when I say, it may be a game changer. Speaking from experience, I love the functionality of a room like this for a family.
This beautiful mudroom has ample seating for anyone getting ready or taking off their shoes. With a backdrop of large windows, this room allows for ample natural light. The dark grey floors contrast well against the white; meanwhile, the bench and perimeter seating excude warmth with rich brown tones. The mixing of cool and warm colors is stunning and keeps this space far from boring.
This is a bit of a two for one deal. This mudroom really has so much going on! First, let’s look at the slight asymmetric design of the cabinets. Making this simple shift to the room makes this mudroom interesting. With a mixture of open and closed storage there are lots of needs to be met. The use of the drawers is my favorite part, as it adds more ways to keep things organized. Can we also just say, the repeating pendants make for a dramatic impact? You can check out the Alturas Pendant at Lumens.
The command center shown above is really a masterclass in style and function. With a place for items like keys and glasses, but also that pesky mail! There is even plenty of room to keep stationary and random household items you might need as you leave the house, a pair of socks anyone? If you love this green, (it is fabulous) it is Sherwin Williams Pewter Green.
If you already have built-ins for a mudroom and you want to just do a refresh to incorporate your pet, look no further than this doggie island!
The dog crate is perfectly situated under this island and allows for an additional surface to store treats. If you are worried about a doggie island being a waste of space for a future homeowner, the crate is mobile!
I enjoy the pattern play and the moody effect of this rich mudroom design. With a wall of pegs and brass hardware, this room transports you to the country. The skirted bench provides a beautiful and simple way to hide unsightly boots or shoes.
My favorite moment is the cabinet in the corner. An antique chest of drawers offers storage and a place to keep accessories or most used items, in plain sight.
Can a mudroom get much better than this?
In the UK, they call it a Boot Room, but it holds the same function. A room to drop your coat, shoes, and rain jacket without a fuss or trekking through your entire home.
I adore this massive skylight and this trough style sink, genius.
With a wall of cabinetry, there is plenty of storage and places to keep unsightly items. The room is very light and bounces all of the natural light around the room. This real keeps your eye looking out towards the lush garden and visually expanding the space.
Do you have a narrow space to work with? Consider maximizing your room with a long bench and row of hooks flanked by closed cabinets.
This room is pulling double-duty. Having a desk in a mudroom is a clever way to make sure you can file away important papers in a convenient place and provides a spot for homework or bill paying.
In keeping the palette consistent from paint, floors and furnishings the room appears larger. Not to mention, a full-view (glass) exterior door provides ample natural light and draws your eye out!
So what do you think of the Mudrooms showcased? Which one is your favorite and is there something you absolutely want in a mudroom?

From the time I was a young child, I have loved interior design and beautiful things. Ten-year-old me would create “floor plans” on notebook paper and design the dream homes of my siblings. We would have an initial meeting and after jotting down their wish list, I got to work creating the home of their dreams.
After designing the layout, I would take the Sunday newspaper ads (are those still a thing?) and cut out pictures of furniture, lamps, and accessories to create mood boards for each room in the home. When I was all done, weeks and weeks later, I would showcase my work and pitch my design ideas to a sibling.
If you too enjoy beautiful things and the process of turning a vision into a reality, welcome! If you love watching homes transform, but just don’t know how to start or have the resources to buy everything you like, stick around. I love finding affordable and practical design solutions to give YOU a gorgeous home you can be proud of.
