Color Drench

Taking one color and drenching your space is a way to give it some life! Simply paint all of your walls, cabinets, built-ins, moldings in the same color to achieve this look. You don’t have to paint the ceiling too, but if you really want a cozy space or you just have tall ceilings, you should certainly do this too.

One thing about color drenching is it’s not limited to any color. In an office, color drenching in a dark and moody color may make your room appear a little smaller, but at the same time with less visual variations in color it can make a space feel larger! In short, just be mindful of the color and how you apply it.

Pro tip: Don’t paint the office black. I go into some detail about this here: How to Create a Productive and Peaceful Home Office. The drawback of a room in black is it negatively impacts our mood and productivity. You should use black in spaces you don’t sit in for any long duration.

One Focal Point

For a moody space, choose just one focal point. You don’t want so much happening that your eyes can’t quickly rest. In a home office the focal point might be the desk itself. Perhaps you have an antique or a piece of artwork you want to make the star. Maybe you have a great view so you want to draw attention to the outside. In any case, less is more to create a moody and calming environment.

Ambient Lighting

It’s not enough to focus on a moody space in the daytime. What happens when the sun sets and you need light?

Ambient lighting is crucial to having that moody office space after dark. You don’t want to turn on a giant beam of light! Have soft warm bulbs in lamps and have more than one. Think about a matching set on a credenza or having a large floor lamp next to a reading chair and a lamp on your desk. There are lots of ways to incorporate ambient lighting. Just remember, the bigger the space, the more lighting options you need.

Artwork

Sadly, I think artwork is all too often an afterthought or just forgotten. Art truly elevates a room and brings it to life.

Use artwork to really punctuate your moody office with a distinct color palette or go for a more monochromatic look and pick something that blends with the room.

Ground it with a Rug

A moody space is just begging for that cozy factor and that is why you need a rug. Regardless of your personal taste, there are seemingly endless options out there. If you want to keep that moody vibe, choose a rug that won’t compete too much with the room.

Oriental rugs or even patterns like gingham or stripes can still bring moody when you use the right colors. The other great thing about a rug is it can really disguise the floor.

If you don’t love your floors currently or they are really light, but you crave that moody space (why else would you be reading this?) then a large rug is just the thing to transform your room without removing floors.
