3 Simple Tips for Styling Your Front Door

Want some simple ways to make a good first impression on visitors? Here are 3 simple, but effective ways you can style your front door to make a statement.

Start with Good Lighting

Before you even touch the front door, consider your current lighting.

Do you have a single pendant above the door? Do you have two sconces flanking the door?

Whatever you are working with now, assess if the lighting is actually sufficient at night. Also, consider how light impacts the overall aesthetic of your front door. I love these examples below.

Layer a Mat with a Rug

Over the last several years it has become incredibly popular to have a welcome mat on top of an outdoor rug of some kind. Creating this layered look is beautiful, but also practical.

When you use a layered approach you also create a surface to use other decor in a seamless grouping. You can place planters on both sides resting on the rug to create symmetry and balance. For a more relaxed approach, place a planter or two on just one side. There is no right or wrong, just what you like best.

Having a mat at your door is also extremely practical. You want to be sure you and anyone entering your home, has a place to wipe their shoes off.

Pro Tip: Always use an outdoor rug that is at least the width of your front door. You can always go bigger, but you don’t want your rug to be smaller than your front door.

Use Greenery

Using faux or real plants is up to you, but consider what impression your choice leaves. Flowers for instance will bring in color and attract certain insects like bees in many cases. It will also create a very friendly and inviting home entrance.

A topiary, real or faux, will create a more stately look to your home’s front door. Meanwhile, a fern will create a more relaxed and rugged environment.

Always take into account your climate, shade and how much maintenance you want, and you too can pick gorgeous greenery for your front door.
